The 4th Generation Has Arrived — and It's Not Going Anywhere
K-Pop's so-called "4th generation" has been building momentum since around 2018, but in 2025 it has fully matured into the dominant era of the industry. With 3rd-gen giants like BTS on military hiatus and BLACKPINK focused on solo activities, the stage is open — and a new class of acts has risen to fill it. Here's who's leading the charge and why they matter.
ATEEZ — Performance-First Powerhouses
ATEEZ (에이티즈) debuted under KQ Entertainment in 2018 and have built one of the most devoted international fanbases in the generation through relentless touring and jaw-dropping stage presence. Their music — often cinematic, high-concept, and narratively complex — rewards deep listening. Albums like THE WORLD EP.FIN: WILL demonstrate a group fully in control of their artistic vision. They're frequently cited as the 4th gen's best live act.
Stray Kids — Self-Producing Trailblazers
What sets Stray Kids apart is that the majority of their music is written, composed, and produced by the group's own production unit, 3RACHA. This gives their discography a singular, uncompromising sound — heavy, noisy, chaotic, and cathartic. Their album ROCK-STAR debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, a remarkable achievement for a K-Pop act. In 2025, they remain one of the genre's most commercially and artistically potent groups.
IVE — The Definition of "It Girl" Energy
IVE (아이브) under Starship Entertainment have become the definitive "concept group" of their generation — each release arrives with a sharply defined visual and sonic identity. From the retro cool of LOVE DIVE to the confident pop of I AM, IVE consistently deliver polished, radio-ready K-Pop with serious artistic intent. They're arguably the best current example of the classic SM/JYP polish ethic applied to Starship's roster.
(G)I-DLE — The Outliers
(G)I-DLE (여자아이들) under Cube Entertainment stand out in 4th gen for their member-driven production — leader Soyeon produces and writes extensively for the group — and their willingness to go places other groups won't. From political commentary to deliberately abrasive production choices, they're 4th gen's most unpredictable act. I feel remains one of the most acclaimed K-Pop albums of recent years.
NewJeans — The Paradigm Shift
Perhaps no act better illustrates how 4th gen is evolving than NewJeans. Debuting under ADOR (an HYBE subsidiary) in 2022, they stripped away much of K-Pop's maximalism in favour of clean, lo-fi influenced pop with Y2K aesthetics. Their music is deceptively simple and earworm-effective. Despite significant label drama in 2024, their cultural footprint remains enormous.
What Defines 4th Gen?
- Heavier production: Darker, more industrial sounds are mainstream where they were niche in 3rd gen.
- Global-first rollout: 4th gen acts debut with international audiences already in mind.
- Member involvement: More groups have members actively involved in songwriting and production.
- Short-form content: TikTok and Reels are as important as the music video for building a fanbase.
2025 looks set to be a defining year for 4th gen — with several major comeback cycles announced and the anticipated return of 3rd gen giants looming, competition for the top of the charts has never been fiercer.
